cleaning foam filter
#4
I've used gas then dish soap on my stock 400EX foam filter for 5 years and is still in good shape. I never let the filter sit in gas very long. Get a large coffee can fill it 3/4 full of gas, push up and down on the filter 10-20 times in the gas, sling the gas out (I slung the gas out on weeds), take the filter inside and wash twice with dish soap and the hottest water you can stand, sling out excess water outside, let it dry over night, oil it up good with PJ and your ready for the dustiest conditions imaginable (LS sandstorm). I normally have 2 filters on hand so that I always have a fresh one ready to go. 400EX filters are only $15 or so and I've found them to be the best and I've tried alot of them including Uni. I bought a White Bros and found sand in tube and threw it away with after first ride. Never a problem with stocker with over 150+ mentioned washings.

I don't like using a solvent, because it just dissolves the oil but leaves the dirt behind. This allows the dirt to penetrate even deeper into the foam.
I turn the filter inside out, then spray it with PJ1. Let it sit for 10 minutes to give time for the oil to dissolve. Squeeze out the soap and then rinse it out with warm water, again from the inside out.
