Default upgrade filter to k&n?

with the mods done in my sig, would it be worth it to change my filter from a uni to a k&n. i would also run an outerware filter (i have no airbox lid). would this be worth it. also would it give enough air to have to rejet or would it not increase the air that much. thanks

Uni filters are better for keeping stuff out. Any foam filter is, but K&N filters let air flow a TAD more. Not enough to notice a diffrence therefor you probly wouldnt have to re-jet .

Yes and NO

Yes it will ad power and you will probably notice it.

No they are not good on motors, they do let alot of dirt by....I suggest using an outerware - especialy since you are not running a lid. Get the Powrell vented lid to help keep that box dry.

you shouldn't notice a power gain. i would NOT change. i prefer the uni filters. my buddy has a K&N and one day my bike runs better and the next his does. i wouldn't consider changing the filter a power gain.

did you get that carb tuned in good yet??

The difference in air intake will be DRAMATIC! Look at that screen metal insert in your stock airbox. These are very restrictive! You will definitely need a rejet! (If you didn't have to rejet, you have changed nothing, so what would be the sense in making the modification???)

A K&N should be run only by those who are **** retentive about maintenance! I have 3 filters for each bike: One on the bike, one oiled up and ready to go, and one in the wash. I change them as soon as the Outerwears gets moderately dirty. That is one days ride out here in the desert.

I run a K&N on my bike and have no problems. As long as you do regular maintanence to it the K&N is actually a better filter. Some guy at Little Sahara, OK asked me the same thing while I was there last year and mind you that I run without the airbox lid. He and I both had 400exs and we both pulled filters and mine was cleaner along the inside of the intake tube than his was. If you don't want to have to service it stick with the filter you have.

I agree but I don't have 3! I have 2. One on and using, one being cleaned/oiled for next day. Switch every night. I have never had an engine problem due to a K&N filter, except when I let them get so dirty they practically clogged, but not dirt gets through if you make sure they are on correctly and oiled with an outerwear. I've been using them since about '92.

on a 400ex, the screen insert is NOT used with a uni filter. i can see how that screen is restrictive. the twin air filters use them but not the uni's.

yea my uni doesn't use a screen, it uses a coil to keep it from compressing.

thats why i was asking if i would have to rejet. i was hoping the answere would be yes because then i would know the power would increase. but if the answer was no then i would know that i shouldn't waste my time.
