Honda Rebate

My father is just a few weeks away from purchasing an '04 rancher 2x4. I've been researching them quite a bit, and it seems as though it will be as solid as every other honda I have ridden. Anyway, nearly every honda dealer I visited had a price of around $3999 out the door, but in Batesville, MS(25 miles away) the price was $4599, with a $3000 rebate after 3yrs. This seems like an awesome deal if you have the cash to spare for a couple of years. This rebate is also available on the 4x4 rancher which would be $5399 before rebate. I understand that the dealer earns the interest off of your cash for three years, but it still seems like it wouldn't benefit honda, aside from giving you a $3000 lump of cash when you first start deciding that your bike is getting old and that you could stand for a new one. Do you guys think this rebate is a good offer?

It is an awesome offer - BUT it really sounds fishy to me.
He is selling you the bike for $4599.
He is going to give you $3000 back after 3 years (if he is still around)
He is going to earn interest on $3000 for 3 years - at 5% interest rate he will not earn more than $500 interest and 5% is well above current CD interest rates.
So he will end up collecting $4599 + $500 interest minus $3000 he gives back to you which means in the end he gets a total of $2099 for the bike he sold you that everyone else sells for $4099 - so you get it at half price??? $2099 is got to be well below their cost on a $4000 retail bike.
Sorry - but I don't think this is possible - wish it was. Is it a cash rebate - or is it a $3000 trade in allowance along with you giving them your 3 year old bike for a new bike in 3 years. Even that seems a huge stretch since it is unpredictable of the miles, condition, etc of your bike 3 years from now.
Honda is not sponsoring this - nothing on their web site - and Honda only shows 1 dealer in Batesville - Big Delta Honda and they show no special offers on their site.
Real sorry - It simply sounds to good to be true. But if it is - very best of luck to you.
Let me know how it comes out once you checked it over really good - you have peaked my curiosity..
