Default Ebelbrock or Fcr carb for 400ex ?

I have a '99 400ex with these mods 416 big bore, full big gun pipe, K&N filter, no air box lid. AND i am going to buy a stage 1 hott cam

next week. The stock carb is jetted right... So should i get a bigger carb? Is it worth the money and if so which brand.

I would like to retain some bottom end for wheelies and slow trails but also have good response and power.

I would like any help or experiences you guys have had.

Thanks Tom

these carbs don't give as much power as what most say. if your stock carb is jetted right, your won't notice much. you will notice better throttle response because the throw on the fcr is much shorter than stock. if you find a good deal, go ahead and get one. if your have to pay $450, i wouldn't. the power gains were just not as i was expecting. which, i drag race so that matters too.

i've seen on most times the dyno only shows an average increase from a properly tuned carb to an after market like the fcr or edelbrock only add a 2-4 horse gain (on average), even so . im putting on a edel brock quicksilver for a 440 on my wifes bike . the more of those 2-4's you put and pretty soon you've gone from 2-4 to 8-10 . of course you still need to recalibrate that for each thing you put on . just because the manufactuere of a couple of things you put on promise a gain of 2-4 hp for each item you've added ,doesnt mean you'll get an additional 2-4 hp each time you add something, but ,it adds up sooner or later. it just depends on how far you're willing to go. i'm going with a new carb.

I have an FCR 39 on my stroker. I wish it was gone. They give top-end but at the cost of bottum end performance. Stay with stock for the torque,IMO.

Get the FCR 41mm carb, I am running one of those and I have more bottom end than stock! It's an excellent carb and it starts waaaaay better than stock and I have noticable gains from bottom to top, dont waste your time shopping around. Go with the FCR 41mm!!!! You wont be disappointed!

There was a carb shoot out a while back with the FCR, Edelbrock, Lectron and Mikuni. The FCR, Lectron and Edelbrock were all with in 1 HP of each other. The Edelbrock did make more torque

which fcr did they use? i wonder how well they were all tuned in?? also, i am surprised the lectron didn't produce the most power. you are suppossed to gain quite a bit with those carbs, but may lack on low end power since they don't have an accel. pump.
