I also have a 86 trx250r.Mine has lots of mods and always starts on the 1 kick.Maybe the 2 kick on a rare occasion. It has no major probs and smoke 400ex's!!!!!!If U want mods the best mod U can do is a pipe.I put a FMF gold series fatty with power core 2 silencer had it ported and put a wiseco piston and had it bored .020.The thing freakin screams!!!!It had boyesen reeds already.
U got to get a casesaver.Always run a good tranny oil and a good 2 stroke oil.I run maxima full synthetic with 110 octane race gas at 32.1 ratio.

I've had an '86R for many years, and yeah, I really love the thing! Never gonna get rid of it. The only problem I've ever had (besides engine problems) is a minor frame crack. Once repaired, it's fine. If you ever rebuild the engine, make sure they put in new crank seals, even if they're doing just a "top-end". I had my crank seal leak and it leaned out the motor and smoked in 3 days. Shift forks can bend if someone has hit the shifter hard for an extended period, but to replace them you need to split the case. I wouldn't do that as long as it shifts good now. I run Golden Spectro at 50:1 for easy dirt riding, and 40:1 for sand dunes. Mine is bored to a 270, Boyesen reeds, stock carb, FMF Fatty and silencer, K&N w/outerwears. It'll keep up with any stock Banshee (not a modified one though), and will take my fat old body where ever I want to go, including climbing the Wall at Glamis. I do have to change main jets when I go to higher elevation. I run a .160 main below 3000 feet, and a .155 above. Other than that, I ride it. Since I had a decent rebuild with a split case, it's been over 4 years and I haven't touched the motor except to change plugs and tranny oil!

Thanx guys for all the help. I forgot to tell you its mods. It has a Paul Turner pipe w/ a fat boy silencer, Barnett Kevlar Clutch, PEP Ez Clutch perch and lever, IMS Tank, Hi-Flite Desert seat (soon to go), K&N Filter,Bandit fronts, holeshot rears, and WORKS Triple Rate fronts. Which one should i put on FMF Ram Valve or Boyeson RAD Valve?

Do you want low end or all around power? If your PT pipe is midrange, and you ride MX, go for the RAM valve, for all around power, get the RAD valve.
Get rid of your K&N if you ride any dusty conditions! Also, get yourself some airbox support rings if you don't have them yet. You can get them for $20 and it will save your engine from dirt!

I prefer the Boyesen reeds. They have lasted much longer than the FMF, and appear to be an equal in performance. I run the K&N in dusty conditions, I just make sure to keep an extra filter/outerwear already clean and ready to go. When I ride dirt, I just change the filter at the end of the day, then clean the other.
