From my experience the recon is more stable, but ground clearance and brute power make the Rancher 2x4 a little better than the Recon. Don't get me wrong, the recon can go up almost anything the Rancher 2x4 can, just takes a little long because of a lower gear. But when you if you are talking about the 4x4 rancher and the recon, a recon is no competition for the rancher.

If you are talking 2wd versions of the two hondas, I would say the one with the best tires. Other than that, I don't know. If more power was needed, then obviously the Rancher, but overall drivetrains and stuff are too similar for any to have any major advantage.

As for the best overall, whatever has both front wheels pulling all the time, and certainly not a Kodiak.

Im sorry this is not sticking to the topic, but I feel I have at least one of the best [if not the best] hill climbers out there. You know,2 stroke produces alot more wheel speed for them steep, loose packed hills.Just my opionion,===Bill

Bill,

You don't have to have a 2 stroke to have wheel speed. Not knockin' your Explorer, but meet me at the Badlands sometime, and I'll let you take my Scrambler up some of the sand hills there.

The more I hear about the Explorer, the more I wish I'd gotten one of those instead of the Scrambler. I love the Scrambler, but the Explorer just sounds like a more versatile machine.

The original question was about climbing. I have a rancher myself, and it's a good one, but for climbing, I dont think a Polaris can be beat. You CAN NOT be in the wrong gear.

Dave
