Mods for 250 Recon?
#1
Hi, I'm new here and have a question about my 250 Recon. It's actually my wife's pit bike while I'm drag racing my old Mopar. But I've gotton into trail riding with my friends and I'd like to know what kind of mods can be done to give this thing some more power. I'm not too worried about handling right now, I just want some straight line speed or quickness.
As far as a pipe, I'd like to have one that makes more power w/o being severely loud if possible.
Thanks, Bob

get a jet kit put some small tires on it (weight removal) take the racks off and cut the plastic thats some weight removal then add a cobra pipe if you can find one if not get supertapp or FMF get a K&N power kit um im not sure what else mine was a 2x4 that would go through more SH*T than the rancher 4x4 would (depends on rider) but if you want a pit bike thats a 250 thats new sell it and get a 250ex,300ex,or blaster

My son rode a Recon for a while, I did a few mods to spice it up, the first thing is the clear plastic air snorkle,it has a hole the size of a quarter, major restriction. Opening that up makes for MAJOR air flow increase, I had to jet up several sizes just to make up for that. That alone made a big difference, the bad thing is the rev limit is so low, that now that it revved better, it hit the limit faster, so he had to shift more to keep the rpms down. Being a shaft drive, the only thing to change the rear end ratio is to put a bigger tire on to give you more top end. Smaller tires will only cause you to hit the rev limit even sooner, now he drives a 300ex, and when I put 20" tires on, it hit the limit so fast, I had to put a 14 tooth sprocket up front to get it back into the right rpm range. With proper air flow, jetting, and an exhaust (factory pipe is very small) you will see a nice increase, but that stingy Honda rev limit will be hard to work around.

I opened up the snorkle opening, put on a K&N with Outerwears, and FMF MegaMaxII slip on muffler (might need to run a quietcore if you want it really quiet). Perked the little bike up quite a bit.
A word about tires. The stock tires are a big part of that bikes great handling! I have had very good luck with the stockers out on the trail, even though they don't look like they would last even one ride out here in the desert. My point is that while some tire changes might help performance, they might not also help handling???
