Most folks rebuild every 100-120 hours, after that you're taking a big chance. And thats kinda pushing it. AS for four strokes, hell, you can go an extremely long time.

ill do mine when compression drops to 170 psi.it was 188 with fresh top end,its at 175 now .probably in spring. those numbers are with cr250 gasket.i think stock w/trx gasket should be at 165 or so with fresh top end.correct me if im wrong please as my motor was at 160 when i got it,put just the gasket on,no rebuild ....it went up to 175 psi

jesus!! not sure how much you guys know... but with a cr250 gasket (thin metal one) I was running 220lbs of compression, with a stock trx gasket I am running 175lbs, though my head is shaved. Next.. Before you tear your top end apart, DRAIN YOUR ANTI-FREEZE!!! out of your water pump AND the side of the jug with the radiator cap off. if your cylinder is scored, it might only need to be honed, new rings and a piston.. which a piston cost about $120, rings come with that, same with c-clips. honing shouldn't be much.. $25-$50. And a gasket kit will be some where in the $30 range. Ussually $8 for a base gasket, if you have a stock trx gasket those ussually can be re-used (i'd be safe.. and get a new one). MAKE SURE TO MIC out your cylinder and piston or else your piston will SLAP inside of your jug, that is why if you do get a hoan and the piston is too small (with rings) you have to bore it to the next size.. for ME.. a bore job shouldn't be a ton.. considering at www.nwsleeve.com I had a new sleeve put in, new piston/rings, etc.. and that cost me around $300. Make sure all your studs look good.. make sure your rod bearings aren't shot.. etc.. check your sleeve for cracks. When you put it back together remember to use PROPER ft lbs on the head and jug bolts.. and after you do your first heat cycle check your head and base for any leaking anti-freeze, then re-tighten them intill your break-in is done (3-4 tanks at veriable speeds.. dont hold constant throttle, don't go above 3/4 throttle) MAKE SURE UR BIKE IS JETTED CORRECTLY!! if your rings are burnt up on the exhaust side (ussually) then you might have been too lean.. your bike overheated and yeah.. 2-strokes dont love to be wound SKY high and hold there for a long time.. what u seem to be saying is u held the bike WOT in 1st or second gear for HOW long?? Their are limits on these bikes.. if you just treat them like nothing.. it will act like nothing and break on you.. only to cost you More money.. A properly mantained bike should use the same piston for 2-3 seasons.. hell.. my brothers 1986 trx250r had the stock piston in it for 17 years.. WHATS THAT TELL U?? don't be lazy, take care of your bike.. change oil regularly, tighten all bolts to correct settings, jet it properly, use the correct oil mixture, and you'll be fine.. for a LONG time. Maybe you should pick up a manual made by Clymers to help you..

From what I understand about race gas, is you need to start playing with the jetting again also to reek the full benefits of a high comp motor on race gas. not just change the gas type.

To race gas or not to race gas??

Jetting is no problem, I'm a tuning freak!

You only need race gas if your compression is high enough to require it. If you run too high of an octane your losing performance and just wasting money.
