The 250R is a notorious gas hog! If you really want to get some distance from a tank of gas, go aftermarket (I have IMS 3.6gal). The stock tank is a 2.4 including reserve. Dependability? Well, since I've learned about them, I've haven't had to do any engine work in a little over 4 years! My friend has an '88 that has NEVER even had a top-end (you can hear the piston slapping a long way off though)and still runs! There are several in my riding group and they are as overall dependable as any of the four-strokes.

Man, I know how you feel! I had a 300ex and just traded it for an 86R last night. I rode it this morning, holy crap that thing moves in comparison! Dont worry about gas or reliablility, they are worth a few extra dollars in gas, and seem to have good reliability too.

If you guys think that a 250R is fast, you should try riding one with a 340 kit in it. Oh my G*D is it fast!! I have 3 250R's so I have a good comparison between a 250 and the 340. The 340 will blow the 250 away so badly it isn't funny. I really underestimated the engine, it only takes 2 gears and I am easily pulling away from any other 250R. The 340 can open up my lead to 10 bike lengths in seconds. I can't even explain it well, it is just too fast for words.
