I have a new 400ex that is almost ready for its first oil change. What oil does everyone recommend? HP-4 Honda oil is 7.00 a quart at the local bike shop. Is it really worth it? I trail ride with my family and friends so do I really need a racing oil. Please give me your opinions. Thank you.

Okay here's the scoop,
HP-4 oil is semi-synthetic meaning it has much better lubricating properties and handles heat better than conventional oil. And we all know that the 400 runs real hot! When I had my 20 hr check up the dealer put GN-4 oil in. I'll be putting in either HP-4 or Maxima Racing oil next time. $7.00 a quart is a little steep. But you can rest assured that your engine is getting good lubrication.

Well boys, you're all paying too much. I've been running stock oil for the pasty 5 years, and i've only had MINOR ENGINE PROBLEMS!!! (e.g. my piston went through my top end, my piston went through my bottom end, blew 3 rods, went through 8 valves, 5 trannys, 3 cams, 4 counter shafts, and 3 cases. Well my oil is STILL GREAT, its got alot of metal chuncks floating in it... but i heard those add horsepower!! i think they do. Try using stock oil for the entire life of your quad, its a good way to save a few buck and increase performance.

Well, that was interesting!!! I also use 20/50 in mine in the summer then when winter comes I'll use 10/40. I use the Torco brand and I think it 3 or 3.50 here.
