While changing the outerwears on my K&N air filter, I noticed a spot where the filter had been wearing against the snorkle tube. At that wear point there was a hole in the Outerwears and the screen that encloses the gauze material had worn completely through. If you have a K&N on your 400EX, and haven't checked it in a while, you should.
