Oil level is probably the problem. I always use 20w-50 myself. If its internal I'd suspect defective valve seals before replacing the piston rings.

Valve seals will manifest themselves after cold start. Rings, after the engine warms up. Oil level is not nearly as important on a dry sump engine like the 400EX.
