the top speed is about 75mph. I used my GPS to determine this on my old tecate. You see 250rs hooked up and seling for so much becuase you can hook them up. For example say you needed a tie rod end for your tecate. It will run you about 50 bucks. Say you need one for a 250r, it will cost you less than 20 bucks. The high price of parts and the availablity prevent most people on a budget from building up a tecate.

I never did race it. It was only for fun. It was stock. The parts are high price becuase they are rare. I'd say less than 10% of the parts for that bike are available aftermarket. They only made the bike for 11/2 years. I'd say about 70% of the parts are available at the dealer.
One thing about that bike is the stator. They are known for having stator problems. When I had mine, I replaced the entire electrical system including the ingnition coil, stator coil, lighting coil, and cdi. I would only get about 4 hours of riding out of it before the stator would burn up. I put 5 or 6 stators in it unitl I got fed up with taking the thing apart every 4 hours so I sold it. There are aftermarket stator setups avialable that do work good (with no lights) but they are high dollar (6 or 700 bucks).
You should do a search on google or on this site with the keywords "warmdye" and "tecate" and you will see the problems I have had with this thing.

I have heard the tecate was the fastest of the three from a lot of people. The reason you see so many hooked up 250r's is because they were the best quad for motoX due to superior frame geometry. If you are doing all sorts of riding, I would recomend the lt250r. The price is right and there are tons of parts. Especially since you do not like the bidding scene because you would be spending a lot of time on ebay looking for parts for a tecate.
If you just want to be different and are not going to be hard on it then the tecate would be just fine. Since you are concerned about speed, it sounds like you are going to be doing some play racing though.

out of the three the tecate is by far the fastest. but there are problems with them, the front end is to narrow, and parts can be tricky to find. if you find one that has a good motor in it all you need is some 2+ A-arms. A tecate4 with a FMF pipe and proper jetting will beat a stock banshee. if you go to GOOGLE and enter tecate parts on line you will find a company that specializes in motor mods for them, pipes, motor kits, cool heads, what ever you need.
