A few 450R Mod Questions
#1
A friend of mine is getting a new 450 this month, and is considering the TRX vs. YFZ. Biggest factor being that you can pick up a new TRX for about the same price as a used YFZ. Anyway, we've got a few questions about the Honda:
1. HRC kit or not? It seems that the only benefit to would be the better cam. The rest of the stuff would just be a waste since this 450R would get a new full exhaust system, throw away the airbox lid, add a K&N, and rejet. If it was mine, I'd skip the HRC kit and consider buying a better aftermarket cam and do the rest.
2. You can't advance the timing on the 450R (like on the YFZ) can you?
3. Recommendation about aftermarket CDI - does it need one or not (esp. after the mods)?
4. How much are factory aftermarket plastics? Those '05 black ones look sweet
5. Good ideas on weight savings? (Besides heelguards)
6. Anything else that needs to be considered to hop this puppy up?

Predfan,
I guess I'm missing the logic of your friends thinking.
You said you could buy a new R for the price of a used YFZ.....true. BUT, you have mentioned spending a fair amount of money already on the R to gain performance from it. Nothing wrong with that, everyone does it. When all is said and done your friend has spent as much money as he would have on a new YFZ and his R is now about the same speed. Why not just get the YFZ and then spend the same amount of money to have a quad that is even faster yet?

New vs. used is one reason, warranty is another, and unfortuately as good as YFZ's are, everyone has one. It's not much different that me owning something different too - I own a predator. I would never have thought that Polaris would be in my garage, but I'm very pleased. I've seen a few 450R's out there that are pretty sweet too.

the black may look good brand new, but it really shows scratches and looks like crap real quick. as far as weight savings, i hope ur willing to spend some serious cash on aluminum a-arms, and an axle. those r about the only 2 places (other than wheels and tires) that u can save weight on that bike. taking heel gaurds off to save weight is pretty dumb, they weigh what? maybe a pound total, it's nothing that you would notice, and the bike looks better with them on ne ways. the 450r revs out at about 10,500 RPMi think Curtis Sparks has a whole new ignition that will up that to about 11,000 or so, but the ignition is runnin around 700 bucks (if i remember correctly). i'm still trying to find out if u can advance the timing, if u can then i'll be doin that on my bike. if u buy the HRC kit, then your wasting your money, the pipe mod is done by simply takin off 3 bolts, removing a part, and puttin the 3 bolts back on. as far as airbox, u can cut a hole in ur lid and have the same affect, jets cost less than $5, and the only thing ur missin is the cam. i put a new filter, pre-filter, no airbox lid, re-jet, pipe mod on mine for less than $60, now all i need is a new cam and i'm better off than with the HRC kit, and for less money.

You are very correct, just about everyone does have one. But there's a reason for that. I wouldn't knowingly buy something else just because I wanted to be different and be behind. Seems to me if one was going to drop 5-6k on a toy why not have the best? Maybe I look at things differently????
