the 400 and the r can't even be compared in my book. I don't know about stock to stock, but as far as modified or even slightly modified the 250r takes the cake.
And to clear up a statement made in one of the posts: a 250r can easily beat the HP of a 400ex, it's the torque that it can't match.

Webb, that's a crazy deal man i would jump on that $400 i can't believe that! If both quads had insane modds on them that the 400ex would have no chance 250r rips when they have many mods on them. As it is now 250r are still a big hit racing quad in GNCC racing you don't see many 400's so it must be fast considering all the new high performance quad are out now. Also Chris Borich has a sick 250r that he races in GNCC and he can really rip for the most part he can keep up with YFZ450, KFX400,Z400,TRX450R and many more. Stock for stock i have heard they are pretty similar, the R is only a few mph faster than the ex.

i dont think the 250r is as fast as everyone says cuz i have a 84 atc250r with dg exhaust k&n airfilter new swing arm and i run 100+ octane in my bike and ive tied a moded 250r quad and my 99 ex will stays right with my 250r as well as my friends 03 ex 03 z400 and 01 ex so i think the 400ex will do just as good. and it all depends on the rider...maybe thats why i can stay with 250rs allday

Alright - I will not start the 250'R vs. (insert another here) battle again...
Take a ride on an 'R (especially a trike!) - its 'different'. I have a friend with a new 450R honda - I think its a great bike too.
But I don't have the payments either .. hehe..
Besides - my 'R has given me the very best through the years.. I'm happy - even if you think your 400 is better.

My 250R has a DG system on it now and my 400ex has a Big gun on it. Other than that they are stock. The 250R will chew up the 400EX and spit it out. The stock form 250R has 38hp the 400EX has 26hp..
There are a lot of sick 250R out there. They have been fingered so much they will never run right and that's what gives a lot of the 250R a bad reputation as slow.

the 84 ATC250Rs were not as quick as when the 86-89 came out, and whoever was on the modded 250R quad had to be a horrible rider, cause my brother's 04 400ex won't even come close to my 250R.
