i have an 86R that I bought used. it was in excellent condition. they are very reliable. everything on mine is still tight. went forever before its first rebuild. the 250R is an excellent machine. i dont care what propaganda people try to degrade them with. it is still the standard and has only been caught up with by the YFZ....with the 450R behind it. I say that and I have a 450R! 450R has it strenghts and is a good bike, but it will never be a legend like its predecessor; Honda has a few things they need to fix on it before that can happen.

It all depends on the condition of the quad. That could be an excellent price if it's in good condition.

Make sure it's all there; all the plastic, skid plates, matching wheels/tires, nothing missing that shouldn't be, etc. Does it run? Do all 6 gears work? Are the shocks worn out?

The 250R can be very dependable depending on what you do with it. Both of mine are very low maintenence. Basically stock cylinders/heads with pipes/air filters, etc. Jetted properly. Won't don't just fire up cold motors and hammer them, we let them warm up a bit and ride easy for awhile and then hammer them!

I have had problems with the engines, especially when I knew very little about them. I finally found people that knew what they were talking about and a good machinist. I change pistons/rings every other year, cylinders are honed or bored at that time. Change tranny oil twice a year. Clean and adjust chains every trip. With that amount of maintenece, we basically pull them out of the trailer and ride!

plenty more than a lot of 4 stroke guys would like to admit. but the stock 250r is a pretty tame machine and always treats me good. plus if you ever have to do a top end, it isnt half the battle a 4 stroke is.

i bought a bone stock 250r last summer. THis was in mint condition i bought it from some 60yr old guy in Dearborn MI for 2500(a steal if you aske me) and as a 18 year old kid this is the best. I raced it a few times and have doen trail riding. Ive rode my whole life mostly utility. My quad still runs and hasnt blown anything yet. Im rebuilding it now just for something to do over winter. Nothing major ever went wrong everything is perfect. Ive beat almost all quads(havent raced a yfz or 450r). Best money i ever spent
