Has anyone removed their choke from the stock carb on a 400EX? What is the performance advantages and disadvantages to removing the choke? Does the stock pilot jet have to be replaced with a 42.

You can get away with it if you raise the compression. I have an FCR carb on my 400, I just pump it while starting and it fires right up. It doesn't come with a choke. If you have looked in the carb you could see the advantage to removing the choke. It must be 15 to 20% blockage of the venturi.

I have a Trinity 440 kit which is 12.5:1 on the compression. Has anyone on the forum ridden a 400EX with the choke removed?

i have. it was a waste in my opinion so i put it back on. it was harder to start too. others claim it was easier but i don't see how. yes, going up on the pilot jet does help. i have tried a 40, 42,and 45. all seem to work but you just need to make minor changes to the fuel screw position. mine still wouldn't start in winter without the choke. pumping the gas a few times does help though.
