The 250x and 300ex basicly have the same engine. Only 2 differences are that the 300ex is electric start and it has 4mm more stroke on the crank. Everything else about these engines are mostly the same. when my 250x was stock i drag raced a few 300ex's. Stock for stock the 300ex's ive raced we were almost side by side the whole way to full out 5th gear. the 300ex had a slight lead everytime. So there pretty close to being even. As far as cheap mods i guess a better air filter, take the lid off, and find a 350x atc air tube.(the 350x atc had a bigger air tube between the air box and carb. Ur might have to rejet ur quad for that lil bit more air but maybe not. its up to u to tune it correctly. Id definatly find parts off of ebay. If ur lucky u can find a used after market exhaust for cheap. That should be enough to be slightly quicker if the 250x is stock.

get a smaller front sproket by 2 teeth and get a larger back sproket by 1 tooth this will give you more top end speed, bye the way you should be able to beat a 250x.
