my buddy has got a 350 rancher 2wd and he wants to make it a 4wd can it be done and where can he get a kit if they make 1. Has any1 else done this and was it a waste of money? Was there still enough power to get the job done. Thanks for any help

 

check google for salvage suppliers and find a similar size honday 4x4 maybe you could get the parts off it to make the conversion, but really it will be cheaper to buy a 4x4 quad to fit your needs, also you will probably be disapointed in a 350 4x4 power pulling seed ect.., however that beeing said dont let anyone tell you something cant be done, cause if youre motivated, you will end up with a very original machine. good luck post some pix if you do it (pix of each stage of the conversion)

 

Wanted to do it to my trailboss back in the day. I looked into it. there are no "kits" available it would have to be custom and unless your very skilled with fabrication and you have a lot of time to invest it isnt worth trying it, better off getting some new tires or a new 4x4 quad

 

I'm pretty sure that you would also have to buy a new transmittion if you wanted to do that, or some how rig up your own way to run either a chain or a drive shaft off the primary sprocket up front, then you would have to fabricate them all and then a switch to turn it on or off, ....i think after all that the amount of time and money togeather would be more than the quad.

Somebody else asked this a week or so ago. After pricing out the necessary parts for conversion, you're looking at anywhere from $2100-2600 for parts depending on whether you have an ES or Standard shift.

 

A couple of years ago, somebody priced out the parts for the conversion. It was THOUSANDS of dollars. Cheaper to sell the 2X4 and get a 4X4.

 

Yeah someone else asked this same question on another ATV forum so I decided to figure what parts would be involved and how much $$$ it would cost. Below is my response to the original question a few weeks back. As for power, it should be the same if you compare a converted 4x4 Rancher to a factory 4x4 Rancher.....and of course some power will be lost when comparing a 2x4 to a 4x4 Rancher due to extra weight and drivetrain parts being turned. Enjoy the reading it's quite detailed!

First, let me say that your much better off buying or trading for a 4x4 due to the high cost and lots of work involved. On the other hand if you have plenty of money and want a challenge, this is the project for you.
Just for kicks, I checked out the parts manual comparing the difference between a 2x4 and 4x4 manual shift model 2004 Honda Rancher 350 and came up with the following figures:

Please keep in mind that these prices included some parts that would not be necessary to buy if you have the electric shift (ES) models, but they are noted where necessary.
