250ex, ticking away...
#1
hey, i got an 03 250ex in the shop today, havent done much work on this model. heres the problem. when you first start it it has a VERY loud ticking in the top end. quiets slightly after runs couple of minutes. already checked valve lash, ok. getting ready to start tearing down to find it. any guesses??

hmmm...ever think of lose bolts? simple check..but im sure thats not the problem. is there an aftermarket exhaust on there? it could be that the jetting isnt right but im sure u thought of that already too. i'll think on it
EDIT: maybe its low on oil? or hasnt had an oil change in awhile... i'll keep thinkin

Pull the rocker shaft and check for wear, also check the inside diameter of the rocker arms and see if they are ovaled.
When the valves are adjusted to spec and a rattle is still heard, these items are normally suspect. They are fine when opening the valve, but when worn will clatter at the pivot when no tention is on them

thanx for the input, but i found it. went out to the shop a little while ago after pm' ing prieber14 and tore it down. found the wrist pin and small end of rod are worn. i had told priber taht the oil was a little dirty, but full. well, my guess is that the oil was changed recently but way way overdue. most of the top end is worn. time for complete rebuild. just glad it ain't mine.

Sounds like you may just need a valve adjustment. Nuts and bolts are always going to get loose.
