300ex and dunes
#2
You will get all kinds of responses saying they are underpowered and not good duners, but I won one myself and duned it once even before I modded the motor heavily. You can run paddles with 12 or 13/ 38 gearing no problem. A pipe and air filter will help but not totally mandatory.

Ok so I won't say its underpowered. I'll just say its not overpowered. I took my stock 300ex to silver lake sand dunes a month or so ago. The only non-OEM item was a set of Pure Sports Realtors put on backwards for the sand. I had a blast. If you've ever been there you know there is one hill called "test hill". I could climb it in all but the very center section. I just ran out of power. I could make it to within 5 feet of the top but I couldn't make it over no matter how hard I tried. I talked to a few people there and they said since it was so windy, the hill was steeper than normal at the top also. 400ex's were making it no problem. Never once did I feel like I didn't have enough power while riding in the woods. But let me tell you, it never seems like you can have enough power in the sand. I just got a FMF Powercore IV-2, and a K&N jet kit and filter. Much better throttle response and more power. I can't wait to go back to silver lake.

We ran a 300EX in the dunes (Glamis, Coral Pinks, Dumont) for 6 years. The only mods were a K&N, Supertrapp, and main jet change. Stock gears. Ran chevron paddles as they are not as aggressive for straight ahead and could go just about anywhere. It went up Oldsmobile and Comp Hill and the Brawley Slide. It wouldn't climb the Wall, but hey, lots of stuff won't climb that. Then my wife made me ride it. I was pretty impressed with where it would go and how well it did handle the dunes.
