450r with just an hrc kit and slip on is better than just about any 400ex I've ever ridden....

I have been pondering this same question. I think it has a lot to do with what you will use the quad for. I do a lot of trail riding, some local cross country and grand prix stuff. With this in mind I decided to keep the 400ex because to bring the 450r up to the level that the 400ex is I would nave to spend another 4000 on the 450r. So I decided that I need the suspension on the 400ex(with a very stout motor) over the advantages the 450r motor brings.

By 450 are we talking Honda or Yamaha here? The Yamaha is an out-of-the-box MX machine, and the Honda is more of a trail machine. The Yamaha can be adapted for the trail, and the Honda can be adapted for the track.

Depends to a great deal on how and where you ride. The EX is a GREAT trail bike, so if you are riding lots of tight stuff or anything at all semi-technical, that is where the EX is at its best. Out in the open desert and dunes, it handles well but even with mods is underpowered by todays standards.

Both the 450's are geared tall and like to rev. Neither is good for very tight trails in stock form. The Honda does well on trails with some gearing changes though. I find the Yamaha to be suspended to stiff for trail riding.

In my own stable, I pick the EX for real tight trail stuff (like Hungry Valley's single track trails or the San Bernardino Mtns.). I have the 450R set up for desert. There is no bike I have ever ridden that does as well in the open desert as the Honda 450......this thing rails around high speed turns! (Makes my buddies Yamaha 450's seem pitiful.) For an all-around machine, I pick the Z400. It does everything pretty well.

If I had it my way, I would getrid of my 440ex nad get a Honda450, I have done quite abit to mine and it still cant keep up with the big dogs Both are GREAT machines. Its all in what you want, what you want to pay, if your lie me, is it worth it to lose all that you put into the Ex,what you will be using it for.. ect...
