Default Honda 400EX Help

I test drove the '03 400EX that i may purchase tommorow just a few minutes ago at the guy's house........I am new to the Sport Quad world and so i do not want to to get ripped off. I drove it and it seemed real nice except in 1st gear going real slow(like just easing around) that it was kinda jerky or something like that. I called one of my buddy's who has had 2 400EX's and he said that was just cuz i was going real slow and its made to be ran fast not putting around. I was just wondering if any of you had advice for me and any help or advice is greatly appreciated by this beginner. Thanks DG

If you mean you tried to idle around then I could see that happening especially if the idle was set too low.

doesnt sound like a problem, gearing and idle can effect this.

I don't think a 400EX should ever run "kinda jerky at low speed". I would put the bike up on a stand and give the chain and sprockets a good check for adjustment and lube. The chain could have kinks. Sprockets could be worn. Chain could also be way too loose or too tight.

it is just because your going too slow. pull in the clutch or go faster and it will go away. it wants to die because you are going too slow.

I have a CR125 two-stroke dirtbike and if you *****-foot around on it, you'll foul up the plug. This wouldn't be a problem with the 400EX would it? Hey by the way Cals, 'bout how old are you?

The only bad thing I could think off that could cause this would be if the rear bearings were bad and the axle was binding up. Just an idea.

Alright, nevermind. My friend knows a guy from Staunton with a 400EX, but we're 16.

i think he's not used to how much power it has in a very low speed like that, the jerk is because he dont know how much gas to give it.
