Torn CV Boot...HELP!
#1
I tore the SH*T out of my CV boot today while riding. The weird thing was that I was not able to turn my wheels very easily. I am assuming that the hard steering is a result of getting mud and grit up in that unprotected area (the grease was virtually gone and there was nothing but mud in the boot). Is this a right assumption? I also noticed that when I was driving on pavement my steering would jerk back and forth. Any ideas why it was doing that? I obviously know that I need to replace the boot but is there anything else I should be worried about? Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to change the boot. I have a rancher 400 AT.
Any and all help would be greatly appreciated!

You are probably right about the hard steering and why it happened. If all the grease was gone and mud had filled up the boot then you will also need to replace your CV joint. Did you happen to hear a popping noise after this happened when turning? I am sorry I can't help you about changing the boot and stuff.

Remove your wheel and spindle nut. Loosen lower ball joint nut and seperate. Remove tierod end nut and seperate. Lift spindle up and off of the cv axle spline shaft. Inner cv is snapped in with a locking ring on the axle. Just pry the inner cv loose from the differential and the whole axle should slide out. Good luck.

I ususally give the axle a good yank to get it out of the diff, take the axle out and give it a real good cleaning. It will have to be surgically clean to be reused. If its still good, replace the Boot and reinstall.

man i just went through this with my 700 it is a pain in the a $ $ your best bet is to buy a new cv joint and to get a good one cheap go to www.jrgraham.com i got mine there for 82 dollars everywhere else wanted 150 --190 i tried to clean it and one little speck of dirt will cause it to goout and go to your local shop to get a clamp for it cause the clamps are crap
