Default electrical problem on 98 300 fourtrax

hey i got a swd fourtrax that will sometimes not start with the starter. i mean, the green N light won't come on as well as the others. but when i kickstart it. they come on and dim back out if it doesn't crank. when it starts, the lights(headlights included), are bright at idle and dim out a lot while riding. sometimes this does not happen and the starter will engage. the battery is pretty new. any ideas

You might want to take another look at the battery. I had the same problem on my '94. Put a new battery in it and it still did the same thing. Had that battery checked and it turned out the new one was bad too.

I agree, the battery is probably dieing. You can take the battery to almost any auto parts store, like napa or autozone, and they can do a free load test, and that will show if the battery is any good or not. Check the condition of the battery terminals too, if they are corrorded or tarnished, where they connect to the battery, then scuff them shiny, with a file or wire brush, or even some sand paper. The terminals have to have good contact with the battery.
