Dependability
If dependability is your concern then the 400ex wins easily. I've personally experienced ownership for both models. I owned a new Raptor first then got my girlfriend a new 400ex. Her son got a used 400ex a few months later. I sold the Raptor about 2 years later specifically because I was always working on it. I bought another 400ex.
If you get a Raptor, you will need to get an aftermarket one-way bearing from LA Designs. This is a special bearing that engages the starter to the crankshaft. It is designed so it spins freely when the engine is started but grabs the crankshaft when the starter is engaged.
If it is a 2001, it is possible the tranny will go out on you if it hasn't been upgraded. My best advice is not to ever race on pavement. The shift from 1st to 2nd puts too much stress on the tranny. I never had any problems with my 2001 tranny.
The dual carb setup is much harder to deal with in the Raptor.
You will be replacing your rear swingarm bearings, axle bearings, chain & sprockets, and rear brake pads more often. The real problem with the Raptor is it is a torque monster and the rest of the drivetrain components can't handle it. I imagine a 50 HP 400ex would end up having the same problems. Highly recommend getting a new axle carrier with twin row or double wide bearings. Sidewinder sprockets and chain are the way to go too.
Highly recommend 22" RAZR 2 tires on either quad if you are into muddy trail riding.

Dependability
I don't know much about the Raptor (Except MANY claims of a weak 01 tranny). I did own a 400 and it was bulletproof. It was ridden hard, often and asked to do things a 2 wheel drive was never supposed to it. It was a GREAT machine and I loved it. Not the fastest, but great on the trail/woods.

Dependability
Dependability is what honda has built its reputation on. On the track and trail the 400ex will hold its own against the rappy. the honda is more nimble and stable than a rappy. if u ride dunes and such there is where the raptor would shine over the 400ex. other than that i would take the honda over the yamahahaha any day. by no means am i saying the raptor is an inferior machine i love them to death and they are fun to ride but just not for where i go.
