Used 400ex prices?
#1
I have found a 2000 400ex that is completely stock. The chain hasn't even had to be adjusted. I've checked the N.A.D.A. prices on it and they show between 2200 and 2800. He's asking more than that for it, but I thought I would offer him 2500. Does this sound like a good deal? Do you think its worth more because it is in really good shape? Its had about 5 tanks of gas run through it, and sat the rest of the time. I'm trying to convice my wife that I really need a sport bike like this to ride with my sons, but at the same time, I'm looking for a good deal. Whatda ya think?

I agree you need a sport quad.
If he would take $2,500 it would be a great deal. For quads, you really need to go by the condition and not what year it is. They fall into the tractor category in my opinion (how many hours on it?)
I think $2,800 would still be a good deal. If it only had 5 tanks of gas, it must be virtually new looking. It still has the original tires right?
In other words, I guarantee my 2003 is more beat up and worth less than the 2000 you are looking at.

Yes it still has the orginal tires, and brakes, (still in good shape) and chain/sprockets that have never even been tightened up! (still doesn't need it either) It looks real good. It was bought by a guy that thought he would ride with his buddies. His buddies soon after, bought Harley's and so did he. He is the orginal owner. I'm hoping to talk my wife into it, and then she could ride with us on my sportsman. Right? I would hope so!!
I see lots of 400 for sale around my parts, but most are either brand new wanting new prices, or beat up and raged on. I just didn't know if this would be worth the extra money since it is all stock, and almost mint. Or buy one that has some mods for a little cheaper, that has been rode alot harder. (and shows it)

I would go as high as $3,300 if you can loosen the swingarm nut and spin the bolt. Sounds like a great quad. It is still possible for the swingarm bolt to be seized even if the quad hasn't been ridden much due to the number of years old it is.
If you do buy it, make sure you completely remove the swingarm bolt and grease it up then retorque to 101 ft/lbs.
