What should I look for? Any suggestions would be appreciated. It's a 2000. I was going to purchase a new 2001, but this deal came up. Decisions, Decisions...

Bought a 2000 about 6 months ago for $4,900. It was practically brand new.

First:
Get an overall feel for how the person took care of the machine by inspecting it visually. What does it look like?

Second:
You wouldn't think so, but check the person out. What does he or she look like? What type of surroundings do they occupy?

Third:
Idiot check…oil and spark plug. I say idiot, because only an idiot wouldn’t change the oil or plug before they sold it.

Fourth:
Start it up COLD. Be sure you tell the person not to ride it before you get there. Simply state you want to start it cold. After it warms up, listen for valve knock etc. Keep in mind; the engine does tap, however, not excessively. You’ll know if it’s not correct.

Fifth:
Ride it. Wind it out in all gears. Be sure the axle is straight. You'll notice if bent when test riding, preferably on the pavement.

Sixth:
If all passes, buy it.

Note: If you’re really into mechanics, you can probably bring some compression gauges too. I didn’t do it, but I have heard of people doing it. I really lucked out with mine. I am also really happy with the performance and overall bike.
