You could just use a jumper, and jump the terminals of the soliniod, like people do on the old fords. Use a metal pliers, upside down, or get a chunk of heavy gauge wire. The soliniod is just a fancy name for an electrical switch, and you can just manually by pass it.

Here's another tip.....rather than buying the solenoid for the 400EX,... buy one for a late model Recon.
Part number is 35850-HM8-A41. It sells for under $20 where as the one for the 400EX sells for over $60!!! It is the same switch!!
The price difference is because Honda sources the 400EX switch from Japan. The Recon switch is sourced from here in the U.S.

so if the solonoid is just a switch could i just remove it completely for now and carry a piece of thick stereo wire to connect the 2 wires when i want to start it.

The best thing to do until you get the new solenoid is to leave the old one in there and just jump start it across the two large terminals on the top. If you remove the broken solenoid then the wires could short out on each other, and even worse short to ground and start a fire under your seat.

A little tip here is to use an insulated screwdriver to short accross the "NUTS" not the terminals. That way you will be able to remove the nuts easily when you go to replace the solenoid.

Does the motor crank but not fire, or is there nothing going on at all when you cross the solenoid? Did you put another fuse in after the last one blew? You need a good fuse in the holder whether you use the starter button or not, since that fuse supplies power to the ignition system. If the starter isn't even spinning then your problem is between the starter, battery, or the connections in between.
