I don't really trust K&N. They are so thin, even with an Outerwears I can't see how they are ever going to catch everything that nature is going to throw at them. Leave them for the street, or racers who are going to do frequent rebuilds anyway.
Go with engine protection, over a littel gain in performance! I like the foam UNI or White Bros. filters for the 300. The foam is thick enough that you at least have some backup against failure.
Think twice about pulling the lid off if you ride in the wet! If you take it off, I highly recommend the EHS Racing lid with an Outerwears cover (http://www.ehsracing.com/).

Same here I raced go karts and the K@N let dirt in. ANy foam kept it out. THe HP gains with a K@N were minimal and not worth it at all. UNI all the way.
If you ride one trip with a K@n fliter and you ride behind someone on a dusty road you will have tons of dirt in the motor.
You want see any pro dirt riders using K@N.
