it's worth putting aftermarket shocks on front - but that will point out weakness in your rear. To save money, just have your rear rebuilt for about $300, plus the $900 for front, give or take depending on brand, and you get full suspension. Will BLOW away stock suspension.
as for a tool, you mean to make the shock more stiff? just use large pliers. no special tool needed.

Honestly, it depends on how you ride and what size you are. For anyone under 170 lbs, you can get by with the stock shocks a lot better than a 200 lb rider. If you aren't into jumping and flying through whoop sections, it probably won't make much difference to you. I notice the biggest difference at being able to maintain control at higher speeds on tight trails.

Yes aftermarket shocks are very much worth it...
I have a set of Works triple rate with rezies for a 400ex that I am getting ready to sell, I just upgraded to a set of TCS shocks.. Let me know if you are interested.. or anyone else for that matter...
Others on here are also correct.. It would be better to rebuild the rear shock and save a few bucks over buying a new aftermarket rear... I did...
