I have been a dirtbike person for the past 4 years and am thinking of getting a used sport atv and just wanted to know if the 250x was a good atv.

 

It's a great machine. Bullet-proof engine, good handling, good ride, low maintenance. Not real fast but should take you just about everywhere you want to go. I've ridden one in the dunes and on dirt trails.

 

Yeah mines been great. Have you actually raced your 185 against a 400EX? I'm not so sure I would believe that at first thought.

It runs great! Just doesn't need anything really..

Not as fast or powerful as a 300ex. but very close

 

They are pretty cool they handle awesome , in the woods they are unstopable.I ran mine with some banshees and cleaned house till the straights. Then they BLEW ME AWAY. I just got to big for it.

reliable in their day.....but steel is steel.....things wear out

if you have the $$ aim at a 300ex.....i wish i did.....i have spend half the value of my 250x is keeping it up in the last 2yrs....admittably there was cost of a crash in that...but you get the picture

 

The 185 is faster (by maybe 2mph), but it has a ton of mods, including, but not limited to a wiesco 200 kit, supertrapp exhaust, 10.5:1 Compression, K&N Power kit, and others. The 400ex also has better bottom end.

One thing is the 250X in earlier years especially the 87's have a problem with 3rd gear. My cousin had one and it seemed like there was a tooth missing in one of the sprockets, but only in 3rd gear.

I told him he should get it fixed, but instead he rode it until it suffered a massive failure and cracked his cases.

One of my friends just bought a 250X and we are going to go all through it. He bought the WB power up kit and several chassis mods.

My father also had a 250X when I was young. I had a 250R and my brother had a Tecate-4. It was a good machine, but dont think it will hang with a sport 2 stroke, other than maybe a blaster for power.

Also like some others have stated it is an older machine and maintenance could be a factor. So even though you might be able to get a 250X for alot cheaper than a new quad it could end up costing you alot of money. Parts arent cheap for atvs and labor(if you cant do the work yourself) is unreal.
