Rubicon/Good and Bad
#1
Hey everyone, I looked at a Rubicon over the weekend and was wondering what everybody thinks of it. I like the auto trans for sure. I would be doing trail riding and just general stuff for fun. Please posts your thoughts for me. Alan

What year? The 05 and 06 have been getting progressively better
If it is an 04 or earlier I’ll let you know my pros and cons over the last year
Cons
Oil filter access (but at twice a year, not that bad)
I would rather have a thick UHMWPE skid plate, aluminum dents and can be difficult to reinstall without a little bending
No brake light
A stiff ride with empty racks
Stock tires stink/replaced with radials (helped stiff ride too)
Sub transmission can be notchy at times
Drums do not have the absolute stopping power of a disc (in good shape)
Pros
Smooth tranny with an option for everyone (I use ESP 90%)
Ride with full racks is better and easy with smooth tranny
Engine braking is as good as any manual I’ve had
Handling appears to be better on fast smooth trails than cushy quads
Stability on side hills and obstacles is better than cushy quads
Hasn’t hiccupped – runs great - not a single break down, part replacement, or recall
Run out of traction before power in low
Drums have not leaked and still look/work new
Size, big enough to carry decent loads on racks and that you feel like you’re part of it rather than perched on it like a Kodiak, but small enough to leave your buddy with the giant quad stuck in the tight trees
