I just went to the Honda shop to get an oil filter for my 2000 400ex. They said it takes a diferent kind than the regular old Honda iol filter that fits everything else. I looked at both of them and could not see the difference. Does anyone know what the difference is? They said you can use the new one in an older bike but can't use the old ones in a new bike.

It was still a Honda filter but it had a different part number. Every Honda I have ever owned took that same filter. XR350, XR400, 250x except now with the 400 ex they say it is different but looks identicle.

if it costs around $3.50-$4.00 bucks from the dealer, then its the right one.

I have a 400ex. The same filter that Honda currently uses is the same filter for the 400ex.
I use the same filter for my 1994 trx300 4x4 as I do in my 2000 400ex.

Derrick,
I noticed the same thing when I picked up a new oil filter last week. It had a different part number than before and to me it looked a little different. I compared both side by side and you can see that the newer one is the same size but it does have a few changes. It doesn't have an overhanging lip on top and the thickness of the o-ring is smaller than the previous one. I was assured that it was the right one by Honda so it's the correct one. I wonder why they changed?

I go to the local auto parts dealer and get a STP motorcycle filter part number SMO-15. This is the same filter used for the XR400. I believe it runs about $2-3. Hope this helps

WC27,
I have a 300ex also and assumed the same old filter I had been using was the same one for a 200 0 400ex, but the dealer said it is different. The new filter is a HM5 and the old one is a K something. They said you can use trhe new filter in older bikes but not vise versa.

I'm getting confused.....

I have a Honda filter I just picked up about 2 weeks ago p/n 15410-KF0-315... when I look in the parts catalog I got from Helm it lists a p/n 15412-HM5-A10...

So, did they give me the wrong filter? I have also used NAPA filters, and they list the same filter for all 400EX's (Napa lists the same filter for almost, if not all, Honda ATVs?)

I hope someone can clear this up for me

Leo
