With a new DS & stock 1987 250r I am ready to build a custom 250r.Just bought a 1986 250r the motor , frame & a few other major components are OK.Which parts should be replaced with stock pcs or aftermarket pcs?,which will be least expensive but give best performance& reliability? not building a race only machine, only restriction iam thinking about +1 in width &an offset wheel that I can turn to put width back to stock for tight trail riding.Any info., advise,is appreciated.

I would say that most major components would be better off replaced with aftermarket stuff. This means, shocks, a-arms, swingarm, steering stem, etc. The frame and engine are of course good stock, but if you really wanted to go crazy, get an aftermarket frame as well. They are lighter.

As far as motor parts, the pipe I would go aftermarket, the head, I would get a cool head, maybe an aftermarket big-bore cylinder, but not needed, neither is teh cool head I suppose. A hinson clutch basket and barnett dirt digger plates are a good thing to change as well.
Other than that, stock stuff is good.

i would suggest you get it ported (if you want to get in to the engine) and a LRD pipe if you want the best shocks get axis as for swing/A arms (and frame) i would get Roll. these are all my epinions you make the choice for your quad.

I would also agree on the LRD pipe, its adjustable for how you want your power, so if you ride woods one day, adjust for woods, the MX track the next, adjust, etc.

As far as the shocks go, I have TCS and they are awesome, PEP and AXIS are great as well, but more money for the same "basic" shocks. Well the PEP are different, but still the same thing as far as performance.
For an axle, I have a durable and love it. I am gonna order the new X-33 soon, its like 11 pounds and way stronger than stock.
A-arms, I have krypton cause they were cheaper and I was on a budget. If I wasnt, I would get Roll or Laegar. Same with the swingarm.

I am using the standard travel shocks. I have a friend with the long travel and they are straight up amazing, but not needed unless you are hardcore national racing.
Call TC racing, I think that they could steer you in the right direction for TCS shocks. When I got mine, they were in the same building, but I read on here that TCS moved, and cant remember the number for them. Call TC and ask. Otherwise, you can order the TCS shocks from nacs as well. You can get the steel braided breaklines from most places. Nacs, shock connection. If you get A-arms, I would just get them from wherever you get the arms from.
If you need any other info, let me know.

My dad and I redid my 250r replacing the stuff that needed replacing only. And we widened it up,and rebuilt the entire tranny all the gears, washers, forks, etc. My 250r is an awesome machine for how much we got into it.We bought some used white bro's white power shocks off a "national" calibur 250r they came with extra springs and piggy back adjustable res's.My frame isn'y cracked yet neither is my swingarm. We did find the rear bearing carrier ruined so we got a LSR carrier. We used Jd performance A-arms for the price and they offer more camber then the leagers do. I have a pic of it on my web-site before it got the new arms.It has the axle on at the time but U can't tell. I use wider off-set wheels when I race but when I am just trail riding I put the stockers back on.It works great.

86 TRX250r wiseco .020 piston,porting by p.m.s,boyesen reeds,FMF gold series fatty pipe,power core 2 silencer,DG alloy series nerfs,JD performance +2 A-arms,durable eliminator 2+2 adjustable width axle,LSR carrier,durablue posi loc axle nut,nac's casesaver,white bro's white power shocks,fastline braided steel brake lines,uni filter,PEP easy pull clutch perch and lever,motion pro clutch cable,pro design kill switch,18/11/8 holeshot mx's on mitchell .190's,21/7/10 holeshots on ITP wide off-set .190's.

I just rebuilt my R all the way through. Engine, Tranny, put laegers aarms, LSR Axle, Ohlins Fully Adjustable Front shocks, and redid my rear shock. I love it. The laegers arms perform well, hold up well, and with a little polish, look very well. The Ohlins are unbelievable. I would reccomend them. I have +2+1 aarms. I race MX at my local tracks and do some hardcore trail riding.
