Default 400 EX "situation"

I have a 2004 400 Ex and the electric starter is not working. A local parts store quoted me $220 for a new one (I would have to install it myself).
Question #1- is this a good deal?
#2. Is a starter hard to install? Any hints or tips?
#3. If you can, describe for me what to look for as far as it maybe being a "loose wire" or something.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Id eliminate the simple things before replacing the starter. It can get real expensive just throwing parts at something with out trouble shooting the problem.

Button could be bad, battery could be bad, starter relay could be bad, wiring could be loose or corroded.
Have you tried to apply 12 volts directly to the starter? If it spins, the starter is good, and you have something else wrong.

Id start with the battery, hook up the voltmeter accross the terminals, go key on, and press the starter button while watching the voltage. If it drops to below 10 volts, it needs recharging and if that doesnt make it better, it needs replacement.

Let us know what you find

Check online to see if that is a good price. I know www.motosport.com sells OEM Honda parts.

I agree with all the other posts.

If it comes down to buying a new one, www.servicehonda.com sells for $180.80.

It's not that it won't start. It WILL start, I just have to sit there and push the button in anywhere from 10 seconds to 1 minute.....
I have a buddy who is a pro mechanic who is going to look it over for me this weekend.......I will be sure to post any and all results......

thanks to everyone for replying. I have solved the problem.
I took apart the ignition housing and discovered that there was water on the ground. Soooooooo, I dried it off and put her back together and ta-da it works like a dream!!
