I can't help you with the oil screen thing since I don't ride a Recon, but on the jetting question, you really didn't give any info as to why you may think your quad is lean. However, in jetting it is best to start with the 3/4 to full throttle part of the power band. To do that you'll need to install a brand new (un-used) plug & test the bike by riding a mile at 3/4 to full throttle, then cutting the engine. pulling the plug to read the color. If the insulator & electrode is a tan or brown color it indicates correct main jetting and you should not have experienced any skipping or missing during the test ride. If you're getting any cutting out in other parts of the band, ie. idle to 1/4 throttle or 1/4 to 3/4, then other jet circuits are off. Unless you have made some changes to the air flow such as a pipe or filter, I wouldn't think you have a jetting problem. If you need more on this you can email me Or get me on Yahoo IM
BTW,if you plan to do a test/plug read, You can run it in any gear you wish, not necessarily top gear. You engine won't know or care what gear you're in, only that it is at 3/4 to full throttle.

if your recon was lean it wouldnt move until it was running for at least 5 minutes. and It would pop and snap when you let off the throttle. Are you talking about the screen inside the clutch cover? I havent ever cleaned one, even after I shattered a pistion on a XR80 it still wasnt clogged

if it pops when your about of fuel it sounds like a rich problem to me. But I highley doubt that it needs re-jetting as most 4 strokes are happy stock. Does it have a dead spot in the throttle or push out smoke? If not I think your ok. What elevatoin are you rideing at? If someone did a 4000+ jet change and you ride at 1,000 then you are indeed lean

My bayou does all of those things that you have described. It will NOT move at all until it has warmed up for 5 min, you can't even touch the throttle at all or it will stall. It also pops when I let off of the throttle when I am traveling at fast speeds. I pulled the plug and it is grey on mine. I doubt that this is normal, also I have no mods what so ever, the carb has also never been modified in any way either. thanks. Also if I go full throttle from a dead stop, it will stall instead of go!!! I mean if I even blip the throttle, even in neutral it will stall on me. your help would be very much appreciated.

My friends bayou does that too, a grey plug is ok.. white is bad. Try pulling the slide out and lowering the needle clip one possition, it will help but may also be too rich... its free and easy. Just unscrew the top of the carb and pull the slide out and remove the throttle cable and push the needle up and out..lower the clip and put everything back makeing sure the slide isnt backwards and your throttle works normal.

If it is popping when you let off the gas, it is lean. Try turning the idle mixture screw ( on the bottom of the float bowl) counterclockwise 1/4 to 1/2 turns and see if it makes a difference.

JRM,
on a hard throttle smash from the idle position,my 98 Recon will fall on its face and die most allways.I richened the air screw at least 3/4 turn and lowered the needle one notch,it helped some but its still flat sometimes on a hard acceleration,
Bill
