to be honest it sounds like your running out of gas in ur float bowl, next time you run it and it stalls sit a couple seconds, and try again if it fires right up your main fuel needle is clogged just like mine was, a fuel filter and 2900 miles later still runs like a champ, although ur idling issue does sound like a clogged jet, if u have a numbered drill set get them out and see if u can clean the opening's in the jets

I wouldn't recommend cleaning jets if you think they're plugged, they're just too inexpensive and precise to be sticking a wire through. Some deposits are just to hard to get out.

So you said you haven't ridden it for a while and you got it in the summer. If so, this the first colder weather you've ridden in?

Sounds like turning up the idle and going up 1 size on both might be a good thing too based on other owner's comments. It surely can't hurt and will be easy to diagnose if it's too much with a plug check.

Update:

I got the manual for the quad and took the carb off yesterday. I found 3 very small pieces of mud in the float bowl. The main jet looked perfectly fine. The slow jet looked ok to begin with but I blew threw it with my mouth and shot some carb clean through it and upon further inspection, the hole was much bigger and symetrical after the clean. Unless it's my imagination, the slow jet was somewhat clogged. I couldn't remove the pilot jet as it doesn't have a flat-head screw but a round screw that just has one small area of it squared off. Kinda like this Cl. I didn't have a pair of needle nose pliers skinny enough to get in there and turn it. So, I just blew some carb cleaner through that tiny little hole and the cleaner flowed out from where the jet draws gas. I assumed it was clean. Cleaned the rest of carb and reassembled.
---
Tried to start it and it would only run for a second at full throttle w/the choke on and it would slowly just idle down on it's own and die. Few more starts and it ran for a second and would quit. Man! I about tore some stuff up in my garage. So, I sat pissed as a stepped-on rattle snake and drank a cold one.
----
While enjoying my beer I realized I didn't chk the fuel ****. Went over and the darn thing was on reserve. Switched the gas to the on position, got on the quad and shaked it up & down and all around, to make sure the gas was flowing. Pushed the starter button & the darn thing fired right up. It still wants to cut off after about 30 secs of idling for about the first 5 mins on a cold start, but I am certain the idle is just way too low. It definately idles a heck of a lot slower than my rancher.
----
Anyhow, rode the recon for about 20mins climbing hills and running it hard and again, it could be all in my head, but it sure seems like it's running stronger than I remember. The exhaust sounds awesome...purss like it is supposed to as opposed to kinda a rough sound especially after immediately letting off the throttle. It never died. I didn't keep having to switch from reserve to on etc...to keep it going.. I may need to ride it a little longer to make sure the issue is resolved.
----
I would still like to pull the pilot screw but it seems like it would be very hard to adjust it properly w/o removing the entire carb again.
----
What do you guys use to remove the pilot screw???
- I noticed clymer's list 2 different setting for the pilot screw
- california models 2 5/8 out & standard as 2 3/4
I am not sure what mine is currently set at...whatever honda set.

Also, the throttle stop screw is used to adjust the idle, correcto?

*************
edit: Just wanted to say thanks to everyone for their advice. As you can see, I have taken it & so far, my wife's quad is running like new because of it.

Matt

take the top off of the carb and lift the long needle out, some have a little clip on them, if it does lower the clip one notch , this will richen it up a bit and it wont be so cold blooded. If the needle doesnt have the clip , the dealer has little washers that go under it to richen it up ,try this and let me know. Also take the hose off of the gas valve and swithch it back and forth, run the gas in a little cup and see if there is dirt in it.
