Get the 400. I've had several 250R's and I like the 400 much better. The 400 will easily run with any stock 250R.

I agree. The EX is almost as fast as the R and is just better.

if you want to mod the heck out of it or race dunes or MX get the 250R

If you want to stay pretty much stock, ride everywhere with good power and ease of a 4-stroke get the 400ex.

How many of us, here especially, leave their quads 100% stock? You can put a good pipe (only) on a 250r, and beat a 400ex...It takes a lot more money
to make a 4 stroker fast like a 2...
Get the 250r and dont ever wonder what it would be like...

Dont base your desion about the reliability of all 2-strokes on your experience with your Blaster. The R motor is many times tougher than even a bone stock Blaster as long as its properly jetted and maintained. You take a chance when you buy an R but it really boils down to your preferance in powerbands which is their biggest differance. If you enjoy frequent shifting, lots of snap and a little more wheelspin go with the R.If you're more into crusin without alot of shifting a little more usable power and more lowend(unless the R motor was specificlly built for it)get the EX. Hope I helped.

88' 250R stock frame and transmission everything else is aftermarket.

I have a pretty moded 86 trx250r.It beats alot of stuff.I have beat a ct310 a paul turner 330 and a bunch of banshee's.But if riding where just drag racing it wouldn't be very much fun.If U are going to race mx or xc I say get the 250r.But when I am juts messing around I like to ride my cousin's 400ex.It has good power but it is so smooth it doesn'y feel or look that fast. But when your coming into that next corner you realize how fast your going. like I say for play and a little racing 400ex for a little play and a lot of racing 250r. the 400ex is very competive on a track to with the right rider.even in stock form.

86 trx 250r wiseco .020 piston, porting by p.m.s,boyesen reeds,FMF gold series fatty pipe, power core 2 silencer,dg alloy series nerfs,JD performance +2 A-arms,durablue eliminator 2+2 adjustable width axle, durablue posi loc axle nut, white bro's white power shocks with adjustable res's all the way around, fastline braided steel brake lines, braking brake pads, uni filter, motion pro kill switch, motion pro clutch cable,PEP easy pull clutch perch and lever,18/11/8 holeshot mx's on mithcell .190's,21/7/10 holeshots on ITp wide off-set .190's.
