Default A few questions for 400EX owners.

I have the 05 400EX bone stock and I have a few questions I'd like answered.

1. Why do most people remove their air box lid and spark plug arrestor(sp?)
2. What more would I have to do maintenence-wise if I did remove those?
3. What's the best quality pipe for the cheapest price?
4. how often do you change your oil?
5. What air pressure are your front and rear tires set at?
6. What, if any, other mods can I do with out having to spend money?
7. What are the best handle bars for the cheapest price?

OK that's enough for now.....I'll post more later if I have any

1. Free mods, but IMO it doesn't help enough for me to do it.
2. Clean your air filter a LOT more.
3. White Bros., FMF, Pro-Circuit just to name a few.
4. About every 5 good rides or so, you could probably be safe going longer with a 400ex.
5. I believe mine are usually around 4 pounds.
6. Sorry, it's going to cost ya if you want to go faster.
7. Renthals IMO

Default A few questions for 400EX owners.

Taking off the lid lets more air into the engine. Taking out the exhaust baffle, lets more air out of the engine. This improves performance, because as it comes from the factory the engine is detuned and is not running at its full potential. You of course must rejet your carburator, so the amount of fuel will match the greater amount of air entering the engine. If you do not rejet, your engine will be running lean and get damaged.

I like the EHS racing lid, which has an Outerwears across the opening. In terms of maintenance with the lid off, you will have to clean your air filter more often. I like the ProDesign foam air filter, but if you are working on the cheap you can just get a UNI foam filter. Clean and oil it properly!

I change my oil rather frequently. Probably every 10-20 hours. I highly recommend Maxima Extra, ester synthetic oil!

There is a plaque on your fender that recommends tire pressure. That is a good place to start if you are running the stock tires. If you have aftermarket tires, you are going to have experiment around to find what works best.
