Default 250r question

I was thinking of getting a 87-88 250r and i was wondering what is the suspension and reliability compared to a newer 400ex?

You are dealing with an older quad, but IF it has been properly maitained it will serve you well. I haven't had any problems with mine at all, and one advantage that the 250R carries is that it will probably come with an aftermarket suspension. And personally i like the feel and geometry of the 250r over the 400. Just my opinion.

biz,
the little maintenance is worth it! cleaning the jets now and then isn't bad at all.when you smoke those 440ex's will be well worth it.there nothing like trying to keep the front end down in 4'th. just my 2 cents.i have had them all, built banshee's to.

Default 250r question

I have heard to stay away from the '87 250Rs. I've been told from a few sources that they were the "odd-ball" year (I can't say for sure though). The 86s are know to be a little faster and the cylinders can be bored over more times than the 88-89 Rs. The frame of the 86 is also know to be stronger as it has more gussets from the factory. The clutch on the 88-89 is better, and the shorter swingarm is better for MX. Bottomline, all 4 years are good bikes....but shy away from an 87 if you can.

go with the 86 atc. awesome bike! I'm kinda biased though. its just hard to beat that same motor but with only one wheel in the front. the weight makes a big difference. I have had my 86 atc250r since it was brand new and with a big bore kit there is still hardly anything out there that will beat it--20 yrs later! I think the honda 250r motor was probably the most phenomenal motor ever built for an atv. even today. take it or leave it. my opinion.

86-250r and 87 are short rods...88&89 are lond rod motors. this 88 runs 4.3 in 300' and 13.1 in the 1/4. 88 is the best. .20 over bore doesnt help that much with a stock sleave.89 was the only year that has ever gotten close.
