Help quad won't run!! Any Mechanics there
#1
I hope I have this figured out. My quad is a 91 honda 350 4x4. It quit running. My fuel tamk is located under the seat, so I have a fuel pump to get to fuel to the carb. I had no power to the pump so I searched it back and got to what looks like a relay box. I unhooked the wires and jumped the connection and the fuel pump work. Hooked it back up and it quit. I removed the box and started searching and it seems that this is a CDI box. What is a CDI box and will I need to get a loan to get one from honda. Here is a picture similar to what mine looks like.

Id get the service manual, and do the troubleshooting before dropping any large sums for a cdi.The manuals are very good at stepping you through the steps needed to verify that its the cdi. The cdi is where the main chip and circuits are.
If its bad, ebay has them all the time, you take a chance..but the price is right.

Check the year of your machine again. If your fuel tank is under the seat, then you do indeed have a 350, but they only made that quad from '86 to '89. I'll check the service manual on Monday, but I'm pretty sure there is a fuel pump relay on that machine. The relay is more likely a to cause the fuel pump not to run than the cdi. I'll re-post after checking the manual if you don't get it figured out by then.

Yes the tank is under the seat. I was told that it was a 91 when I bought it. I am in Canada and wonder if it was a Canadian model as it is very hard to find a history on this quad. I seen an owners manual for it on ebay once so I know they exist. It is very similar to the trx350d models. I only say CDI because I look on the part Manufacturers website and that is what they called this part. So it could very well be a relay. I can get it to run by jumping the connection with the relay or cDI unhooked.

Sorry, I didn't mean to doubt you. I guess I should have said they only made that model for the U.S. from '86 to '89. I'm not too familiar w/ Canadian models. In fact I know nothing about Canadian models.

ok, i'm an auto technician, so i dont know a ton about quads, but i'm pretty sure that a cdi box is for the ignition, not the fuel pump (capacitive discharge ignition is what CDI stands for)
maybe it is the cdi box, and it turns the fuel pump on when the cdi sees the engine turning over?? i dont know. you could also just hot-wire it into a key switch, so the pump runs any time the key is on. It would suck in a roll-over though if you got bucked off the pump would stay running and could be a fire hazard, but it's worth a try. If that works then i would suspect a problem in the fuel pump controls, whether it be a relay or the cdi box.
it would be best to find a manual, that would be a good start.

CdnRedneck,
I don't know if this will help you much. Here is a place with the microfiche for your quad. Just pick your model. The Honda TRX350D is listed there. You can get an idea of what parts cost in US dollars. Also like hondabuster stated the service manual will help you in diagnosing the problem.
TRX350D
Good Luck.

That microfiche helped alot. The part in question is the fuel cut, relay. It is found under wire harness part #19. I guess I just have to buy one to try it. Would this part be available from an auto parts retailer?

CdnRedneck,
I could not answer that. If you can pull the part and go down to your local auto parts store and see if they can match it up. But I would think it is a dealer item.
Good Luck.

ok, a relay has 2 small wires (control wires)
and 2 larger wires (one has power and one goes to the pump)
make sure you're getting a power on one of the control wires and a ground on the other when the pump is supposed to run. if not, then you have a wiring problem. If all the wiring checks out, then it's probably the relay.
