Default Question about 05 400ex

What's the max time you can go without changing the oil in it? I got it last June and I havn't changed it yet. I havn't rode it in about 3 weeks and a buddy of mine wants to go riding tomorrow. Do you think it'll be ok?

How much have you ridden it since you bought it? I always change the oil in any new quad I own after a couple of tanks of gas and then every 50 hours or so. Oil changes are cheap insurance for long engine life.

I ride it probably once a week pretty hard, but it's still full. It doesn't need oil or anything.

Is the oil still light colored at all or about completely black? I'd say you're WAY overdue for an oil change so at this point one more ride shouldn't due any harm.......I'd change it before the next ride though and then keep track of how many tanks of gas you use to know when it'll be due again.

Walmart carries oil filters for the 400ex, and oil is a couple dollars a quart. For $7 or $8 I can't understand why people don't do basic maintenance.........then they'll post here in another couple months "My 05 400ex is burning oil and smoking, I'm never buying another HONDA!!1!!!!!11"

AutoZone has the filter for $2.99 and several types of oil that you can use. Should be able to get out of there for about $10.

Default Question about 05 400ex

Do you know the brand and part number of the filter at AutoZone? I just talked to the guy interested in my '85 Harley today and he's going to be stopping down this week to check it out. It's really looking like I'll be bringing home the '04 400EX Sunday.
There's an AutoZone about 1/2 mile from my house so that'd be very convenient!
Thanks in advance for any info!

And people will bitch and moan when Honda won't cover engine damage. Just because your under warranty, doesn't mean EVERYTHING is covered. Lack of maintanence is one of the things that will void warranty on your engine. Just because the dipstick says it has enough oil in it, doesn't mean the oil is actually lubricating the engine like it should. Oil breaks down and can't lubricrate like new oil will. I have torn apart engines and can tell which ones get the oil changed regularly and which ones don't.
