The biggest drawback of the shaft drive is that gearing ratios are not variable like they are with sprockets, so your top speed is going to stay within 1-2 mph of a stock one, no matter what you do, unless you put taller rear tires on it.

All my brother did to his 250ex as far as power mods is a white brothers slip on and a k&n filter, and jetted with the airbox removed. This did more than most people expect it would. Although the top speed is still around 55, he can get there quicker. It added power all they way through the powerband, but most noticably at high rpm's.

And if you didn't replace your stock rear tires yet, that's the first thing i'd recommend doing. The stockers puncture easily, and are terrible for hook-up and cornering. Get some flat profile tires, like holeshots, razrs, or a clone of those. I'd recommend 22's if you're looking for more top speed, that will give you a couple more mph over stock ones, but 20's would be better for cornering.

If you do the basics and it's still not fast enough you could get a cam, and a big bore kit, but once you get to the point that you're willing to dump that much money into it, you're better off getting a true sport quad and starting over. After all, it is really just a recon with different fenders. It's a great trail quad, but it's just not worth it to put more than a couple hundred in mods on it. My brother already spend over $1000 in mods on his, and he wishes he would have just traded it in on a 400 instead.

there's a picture of his in my gallery to the left, if you want to see it
