400EX burning oil at cold start
#11
I put in 2 qts even.
But I notice that the oil tank reads low when it sits for a while. But after you run it, it goes back up. Is the oil draining down to the crank case when it sits. Then the case is over full, blows oil into the intake and smokes after I start it.
Could this be it? Huh? Huh?

nah, still shouldnt be that big of a deal. The dry sump system is supposed to be started and shut off to check the oil first. It's possible that the little extra oil you put in was just enough for the breather to pick up on a cold start.
how long does the smoking last? it still could be the valve seals. check the compression, then put some oil in the cylinder (a teaspoon or so) then check again. It will go up, but if the first reading is lower than spec and it comes into spec after the oil, then you probably got worn rings, then you'll need to do a top end job, which means you will probably put new valve seals in anyways. Could also be worn valve guides, but again you'll check all that with a proper top-end job.

It was smoking about 2 minutes at startup, then it would stop.
I used the bike last weekend and it didn't smoke at all. This bike has low hours. It mostly sits. I will do the compression check anyway.
I never noticed the smoking until I changed the oil. Weird.

Two quarts is to much oil, hopefully all it was, was that it was over filled. You want to check the oil when it is warm on those, mine shows low to when it is cold and has been sitting.

any time you put too much oil in anything you will blow the oil ring on the piston. Time for a top end job or bardall no - smoke additive and a hotter plug will reduce smoking and turn it black. Good luck man!!!

It's not smoking at all now. It must have burnt the excess oil out.
I think the extra oil was pushing out thru the breather tube, then getting sucked into the carb causing smoke.
Thanks anyway!
