Good deal? 99 400EX
#1
This guy I work with is willing to sell me his 99 400 ex for $1,500. He needs some money. The problem is is that it's been sitting for about two years(since he had his kid). At the bare minimum, he said it needs an oil change and battery. He barely rode it when he had it and he said the last time he started it, it was running kinda rough. I've known him for a while and I trust him. He was an auto mechanic too. He thinks it just needs run. I've actually really been leaning toward buying a new 4x4 utility quad to ride with my friends (they all have utlility's) but I think that I could still have a lot of fun with this and it would be a HELL of a lot cheaper. Do you think I would be into a money pit with this or would a fresh battery and oil change make it run good again?

Hahahahaha, i guess you think its a good deal then, huh? I knew it was a good deal, i was just wondering about it sittin for a couple years, although I'm more used to cars. My buddy told me that quads aren't really like cars, that it doesn't matter if its been sitting a while, it'll still be good. Is this true?
Thanks guys.

I'm with you, I'm more about cars too. But I figure get it, replace spark plug, air filter, oil, and if you want take the head apart and make sure it's fine. If you start it up just ride it around real slow through all the gears and listen for weird noises and such. I would think it'd be fine though if it starts for you!

I'm more than likely gonna buy it. I'll put a lil bit into it and ride it around and if it turns out I don't like it, I can definatly sell it for more than or equal to what I have in it. I won't lose money. It does run good, btw.

Another benefit of buying a cheap 400ex, is that there is a ton of parts out there and you can get them relatively cheap. If it even needs any!

I want to put the best tires I can to try and keep up with my friends 4x4's. What should I get? 22" Mudlites, RAZR II's,...? Also, he said every time before he rode he would have to tighten the lugs, they were always loose. Is this a common problem?

In my experiences the Razr's are the way to go. If you're going to be tromping thru some 4x4 territory, I'd definately take a look at the Razr II's, they work very well on a friend's Z400 and 300ex.
Your lug nuts should not be comming loose, I would put some lock tight on them once you have the tires on there you want.
