[q but how does a healthy piped R normally compare to others quads (400ex, z400, raptor, banshee) with equals mods...
i have beaten 400ex, warriors, a 400ex with a big bore kit , and it wasn't just a littlle faster i am way faster than those and i keep up with yfz and 450r's and a banshee so thats why i have mine
and besides everyone is selling theres and all there spare parts so i say get'em while there hot

If you have the cash flow to continuely maintain the bike, then go ahead. 2 strokes are fun, but require a lot more maintainance. Rebuilds are easier and cheaper, but you also need them a lot more frequently. The technology in 4 strokes has come a long way in the last few years. I just got back into riding last year. I bought a 2 stroke because the fastest 4 stroke around when I was younger was the warrior. I never wanted a 4 stroke. After riding some of the modern 4 strokes, a couple 400 ex's, a couple yfz 450's, and a ltz400, I decided I needed to buy one so I got a z. It's really nice to just go out there and push a button and not have to worry about anything. I never worry about fouling a plug, mixing gas, or how long my top end is gonna last. Unless I'm on my lt. I would never want a 4 stroke sled, but the wheelers have come a long way. I also think that the sled 2 strokes are a lot more reliable for some reason. Who knows maybe they'll have the same advances with 4 stroke sleds where I'd consider one but I doubt it.
My point is that the initial investment in a 4 stroke may be more but will cost you less in the long run. It will be more comfortable in the trails as well. You just have to decide between speed in the wide open trails and pits/dunes or reliability.

That is definetely an '86 frame. But that is a good thing..the '87s were considered odd-ball years as I have heard they have the most problems. That is a clean R. But take it from me, just when you think you have your R all dialed in, something will go wrong. My bike (which I just sold Sunday) was practically BRAND NEW. I built that thing out of a catalog with the best of the best parts....but it would never fail that something would go wrong. Not necessarily a big part failure, but some little odd-ball part would fail. Im not trying to deter you from buying it. In fact, I hope you do buy it so that these incredible machines will keep a presence in the offroad world, I just want you to realize what you are getting into.
