I brought my atv to my local dealer and they said that my crankshaft is broken. I would like to fix it myself to save some money. Does any one know how hard this is or some tips on taking the engine apart. thanks.

 

hmmm I don't know what you level of machincal abilties are. I don't think it is too bad but, have to have specail tools to take flywheel off and clutch. You should replace the oil pump chain and cam chain if you do it yourself or if the dealer does it. I hade a 250 ex that the oil pump chain fell off locked up the large end of the rod.

When taking the engine apart you will need a flywheel puller for sure. When putting the motor back together you will need at least two different types of clutch holders for the two different types of clutches that are on your machine. There are a few other tools that will definetly make the job ALOT easier but are not absolutely necessary.

The most important and most valuable tool you can buy is a service manual. If you are going to attempt the rebuild, BUY THE BOOK. It will give you toque specs, procedures for every part of the motor, tool info and other valuable info that you won't find in the forums.
