1987 TRX200SX stator test?
#1
hello. I'm trying to help out a disabled friend. He has a 1987 trx200sx that will not start. He said it has spark, but very weak. He wants to now if I can test the stator for him with my multi-meter. He told me the stator runs in oil, which I haved seen before, but I guess is true on this atv and possibly some yamahas. anyway, here's my questions, and please keep in mind I am inexperienced when it comes to the electrical system :
1) since the bike has weak spark.......is the stator possibly at fault? what else should I check?
2) how exactly do I test the stator for this atv and what ohms range am I looking for? do I have to remove the stator from the atv to test it?
thanks for your help.

well....spent some time fiddling with the atv and also trying to do more reading on ignition systems. I think I know how to test the exciter coil (blk/red) wire for resistance and also for a voltage test. I still do not have a complete overall picture of this bikes ignition system. I have read about ignition system coils in general and that they have primary and secondary windings. Is the exciter coil on the stator plate the primary winding that is feed a 12v source? and does the ignition coil that goes to the plug contain the secondary windings? with the pulser coil on the stator plate controlling the triggering?

Just an update. Problem was ignition key switch. I have 3 of these TRX200SXs and 2 of them have faulty key switches. I disconnected the four wire harness from the key switch and now I have plenty of spark.
