I to do this but im not sure what to do.
do i need a 400ex to do it?
and can i just buy the kit and put it together?
would it be cheaper to just restore a 250r

Judging from this:
Kits start at $4999
Complete Quads start at $8999
It sounds like you need a 400ex to do it.
Based on that restoring a 250R has gotta be cheaper, even if you find a real hunk o' junk. For that price you can probably buy a completely restored 250R in nice shape and still a few grand left over.

The engine of the 250R is not what made them so legendary. In fact, the LT250R and Tecate were both faster in stock form. The chassis and handling characteristics are what made 250Rs win so many races. A 400EX with a 250R engine is still a 400EX in my book....a really unstable 400EX. It would be cheaper and more beneficial to you to build a real 250R.

exactly. you can still find good 250Rs on ebay, and their prices are dropping a little. recently i saw a mint 1988 on there for buy it now in the lower 4k range. i would have bought it, but i have too many projects going on.
the one from service honda is priced way too high and the engine is straight from the CR250R so i dont think it has a counter-balancer (like the real trx250R) so it willl have some very noticeable vibration. i read a test on it somewhere....no doubt a very fast bike considering the CR250R engine is way more powerful than the trx250r engine and has a different reed induction system, if i remember correctly. if honda had still made the trx version, it would have this engine - of course, tuned down and appropriately beefed up tranny-wise for atv use.
but it is not a true 250r, overpriced and prob will not last as long as the real thing. mine is 20yrs old, i am the third owner, it has only been rebuilt once - has great compression, still runs and looks great. handles better than my 450R, imo.
if you really want a 250r, you can still find them in good condition. buy a real one and save some $$$. if you want a good bike that is newer, i suggest the 450 class or even the z400. z400 is the best bang for your buck right now and they respond well to mods.
